Cost sector caterers publicly praised!

On Thursday 25th April, we attended the 2019 Cost Sector Catering Awards at the London Hilton Metropole for an evening of glamour to honour the professionals who put their all into feeding the UK’s schools and universities, health and social care facilities, justice system and armed forces.

Attended by more than 700 of the catering industry’s great and the good the event is one of the highlights of the culinary year. While the event acknowledged the uncertain path ahead for the hospitality industry and the UK economy as a whole, it clearly focused on celebrating success stories in workplace and public sector catering.

Host, comedian and television presenter, Danny Wallace noted that chefs in the cost sector were tasked with delivering great food in challenging environments – joking that they serve people in war zones, prisons and schools i.e. places where no one else wants to be! Yet, in spite of ever-changing trends, tightening margins and increasing expectations, employing creativity, ingenuity and insight, these professionals go the extra mile to nourish and delight diners whatever the venue.

This year’s event acknowledged contributions across 18 categories, including awards for the armed services, care catering award and education – with wins for University of Stirling, The Genuine Dining Co. and LACA for its communications around 25 years of National School Meals Week. Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Mark Hayman of the Hospital Caterers Association and Bill Toner for his work in contract catering with Gardner Merchant, Aramark and most recently as Chief Executive of CH&Co.

As well as recognising individual and business success, guests also heard from The Springboard Charity and throughout the evening raised more than £5,000 to help the cause further support young people to carve careers in the catering industry.

Congratulations to all the winners, a full list of whom can be seen here, and many thanks to the team at Dewberry Redpoint for co-ordinating this fantastic event!
