Bringing all of the essential elements of an afternoon tea together, the annual Afternoon Tea of the Year Awards presents chefs with the chance to step outside of the traditional boundaries.

The afternoon tea is no longer simply a traditional and exclusive occasion, the market is now filled with innovative recipes, sweet and savoury variations and has options for everyone. The diversity within the market is something to be admired and celebrated, as chefs and operators are becoming more creative than ever, providing their own vision of tea and cake partnerships.

The spectacle of the afternoon tea has expanded beyond tea and victoria sponge - even the tea offering itself has evolved to include tastes from across the globe. Camellia’s Tea House was one of the three sponsors at the awards and provided an array of flavours and aromas to tempt any tea drinker. The Shangri-La Welcome Tea blend was particularly enjoyable and refreshing blend of white tea leaves, apricot and jasmine, leaving a fresh and full flavoured taste.

The 12 finalists showed amazing innovation within the sector, and the final products genuinely astounded the judges. There were three awards presented on the night with the first, ‘Best Tasting Afternoon Tea of the Year’- awarded to London Hilton Park Lane, and the second, ‘Best Presented Afternoon Tea of the Year’ presented to the team from Polurrian on the Lizard in Cornwall. The Cornish team devised a concept where the afternoon tea appears from the middle of a wooden barrel guests sit around, alongside using only locally sourced Cornish ingredients.

The final, most anticipated award of “Afternoon Tea of the Year” was presented to the talented team from Pennyhill Park Hotel, Surrey. They created an elegant menu involving a croque madame, traditional finger sandwiches, coconut parfait with yuzu granite and of course, classic sultana and plain scones to accompany.
