We’re seeing condiments and exotic spices galore as consumers seek to customise and add some zing to their dishes. With more and more consumers looking for flavoursome dishes that are lower in sodium, fat and sugars, and with Diwali just around the corner (30th October), we’re giving you the low down on the best spices you should be using but haven’t tried!
Smoked Serrano Chilli Powder – adds a bold, smoky flavour and spicy heat to stews, casseroles, and chilli
Mace – a similar taste to nutmeg the spice is especially versatile and works well in both sweet and savoury dishes
Amchur Powder – a fruity spice created from dried unripe mangos, the citrus like seasoning works best where a little acidity is desirable
Ajwain – comes from the same family as cumin and dill the flavour is similar to thyme and cumin with a pleasant and mild aftertaste
Kaffir Lime Leaves – holds its lime flavour well and works perfectly in Thai dishes
Galangal – a common ingredient in Indonesian and Malaysian recipes and very similar to ginger
